Every child is a passionate learner but many children with special needs experience a hard time with abstract thinking, sensory overloads, transitions and social communications. Often times it is difficult to find places to go where the entire family can have fun without worrying about their child’s behavior and other people’s reactions. Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) is dedicated to enriching the lives of all children by fostering a love of learning and enabling children to realize their highest potential. Through arts and educational programs, MCM seeks to include and target all audiences in Miami's changing and diverse community by becoming the "town center" for Miami-Dade County's children and families.
MCM is excited to fill this much needed gap in our community and believes an accessible and inclusive museum must address each guest’s experiences by making the facilities, exhibits, services, programs, staff and offices welcoming to all. Access and inclusion practices are intended to open doors and are recognized as critical components of the Museum’s planning and development. MCM pledges to make the Museum an inclusive environment for all children through enhancing exhibits, programs and events to provide more opportunities for children with special needs.
One Saturday a month, MCM will open its doors from 9 am-11 am for children with special needs, their families and friends to let them explore the Museum in an accepting environment without large crowds. Families will be able to interact and network with each other and learn about the available resources in our community.
In addition to MCM’s multisensory interactive exhibits, which invite children to touch, explore and create, the Museum will be adjusted to a sensory friendly environment with modified lighting, sound adjustments and "cool down" rooms available for children in which to relax.
Each Sensory Saturday, children and their families will be able to enjoy special programing such as yoga, art and music therapy. The children and families will also have an opportunity to engage in arts-based educational programming, creative performing experiences and imaginative play that will help to develop social interaction abilities, communication skills and self-expression in a non-threatening community environment.
All guests will receive pre-visit materials that include an illustrated storybook guide of the Museum and color-coded sound level map of the Museum. These will be available so that families can familiarize themselves with the Museum and structure their visit according to their child’s needs.
