As summer comes to an end, here is a look back at the community initiatives we were able to accomplish in that last few months thanks to the support of our donors, board members and staff.

School is back in session this Fall and the classroom experience is open once again!  Get ready for the new school year at Miami Children’s Museum’s annual Back to School Bash taking place on Saturday, August 7 - Sunday, August 8 at the Museum located at 980 MacArthur Causeway on Watson Island in Miami. The most anticipated Halloween event of the year is back!  Families are bound to have a bewitching time at the 11th Annual Not So Scary Family Halloween Bash, that is now scheduled to be held on Sunday, October 10, 2021, from 1:00PM – 5:00PM at the Museum located at 980 MacArthur Causeway on Watson Island in Miami.  The event co-chairs are Jamie and Jon Jerome and Candice and Jonathan Macy.

It’s Healthy Kids Month at Miami Children’s Museum and what better way to celebrate than by providing families in South Florida experiencing food insecurity with access to nutritious foods and resources that inspire a healthy lifestyle.  While Miami Children’s Museum’s galleries are temporarily closed to the public due to Covid-19, it remains dedicated to serving the community and fulfilling its mission, both in person and virtually.  The Museum pivoted its signature Healthy Kids Day event into a drive-thru food distribution to provide our community with a safe and family-fun experience that promotes one of the Museum’s core values: health and wellness.  The Museum has partnered with Farm Share, the largest and most active food distribution organization throughout Florida, to put a good foot forward.  The event is sponsored by Florida Dairy Farmers, Florida Healthy Kids Corporation, Geico North Miami, The Kirk Foundation, Susan & Richard Lampen, and Molina Healthcare.

The Miami Children’s Museum Charter School held their graduation ceremony at the Miami Children’s Museum on 27 May 2014. Thirty-three children made up the third graduating class of the MCM Charter School which benefits from the unique learning atmosphere of the Museum. Located on Watson Island in Miami, the Museum is one of two museums in the entire country to host a Charter School. More importantly, it is the only museum to host 400 children a day entirely for formal education programs.

Miami Children’s Museum’s reputation as the place where South Florida comes to play welcomes a whole new age bracket with the launch of its new “Playmakers Group,” a social and networking set for adults. With a goal to bring South Florida’s professional and civic leaders together, MCM will launch Playmakers with “Art After Dark,” an innovative art sale and cocktail party in association with the Bakehouse Art Complex and sponsored by Douglas Elliman on Thursday, June 19, 2014 from 6:30 -9:00 p.m at the Miami Children’s Museum, 980 MacArthur Causeway, Miami. The evening is a benefit for the Bakehouse, its resident artists, and Miami Children’s Museum.

Friday November 21st will be a special day at the Miami Children’s Museum (MCM). MCM will be hosting the Our Kids of Miami-Dade/Monroe County Inc. and DCF National Adoption Day event. This special day in the lives of young children and their new families is one of the most exciting and uplifting events of the year as they finalize the process by which they are joined together as a family unit. As a special present to these many new families that have completed their journey to adoption, MCM will award each of them a one-year membership to the Museum. This allows them to visit 14 interactive Galleries and Special Exhibits as many times as they want for the whole year.

On Saturday, February 28th, at Miami Children’s Museum (MCM), more than 500 attendees had their martinis “shaken, not stirred” at the James Bond themed 2015 Be A Kid Again Gala, “You Only Live Twice”. Almost 1 million dollars was raised to support educational programming with the help of generous donors, sponsors, an extensive silent auction and a high end live auction hosted by Big 105.9 FM Morning Host Paul Castronovo. Premier Sponsors for the event were Dr. Brigitt Rok Potamkin and Mr. Alan Potamkin and the Fairholme Foundation.  Presenting Sponsors were Jeff and Yolanda Berkowitz and the Miami Marlins.  The event was chaired by Richard and Susan Lampen and Adam and Jackie Malamed.  Honorary Chairs were Alonzo and Tracy Mourning.

Considered by many to be the most unique and playful event of the South Florida social season, Miami Children’s Museum’s Be A Kid Again Gala features exceptional live entertainment, luxurious auctions and a culinary experience unlike any other. This year’s gala, chaired by Michael and Paula Fay, will be held on Saturday, February 27th at 6:30 PM at Soho Studios located at 2136 NW 1st Ave in the arts district of Wynwood. Miami Children’s Museum will take you to “Miami Vice & Spice,” a world of fast cars, fast boats, exotic cuisine and the pastel streets of Miami and Miami Beach with Crockett and Tubbs! The event will honor community leader Merrett R. Stierheim who for the past five decades, has been a visionary in so many roles for Miami-Dade County. The gala will also showcase a one of a kind live auction. All funds raised for the event will directly support the Museum’s educational programs.

Miami Children’s Museum will open Voyage to Vietnam: Celebrating the Tet Festival on Saturday, January 30, 2016; a new traveling exhibition that explores Vietnamese culture.  Children and their parents will delight in the opportunity to discover the beauty, sights and sounds of Vietnam through its most important celebration of the year, Tet. Funded through a highly competitive national initiative by the Freeman Foundation Asian Culture Exhibit Series, and developed by Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose, the Voyage to Vietnam exhibition is traveling to nine children’s museums as part of a national tour.

It is the season of the Summer Games and Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) is getting ready to debut an exciting competition of its own.  It’s the return of MiChiMu’s Summer Games exhibit!  Created entirely by MCM’s educational staff, the newest exhibit is an interactive wonderland of athletic competition and cultural diversity. The Opening Ceremonies of the exhibit, complete with a torch relay, will be held on Saturday, June 4th from 11 AM to 6 PM and will be inspired by the upcoming games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This memorable day will include obstacle courses, medal making, straw javelin throwing and much more!

Miami Children’s Museum was presented with the prestigious MUSE Award in the category of Media and Technology during a champagne reception on Thursday, May 26th at the 2016 American Alliance of Museums Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. This award recognizes MCM’s achievement in the application of media and technology to Gallery, Library, Archive, and Museum (GLAM) programs for their Sketch Aquarium Exhibit. The MUSE Awards competition received nearly 200 applications from a wide variety of GLAMs in North and South America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. MCM was the only Children’s Museum to be recognized for this award.

The Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) is proud to present “Season of the Arts,” every Saturday during the month of December from 11AM – 3PM.  The “Season of the Arts” series will introduce children and their families to a different form of art each week. The Museum has partnered with local artists and organizations such as, Xavier Cortada, New World Symphony, Florida Grand Opera and dancers from Miami City Ballet,in an effort to expose youth to the arts via this special programming during the holiday season.  The “Season of the Arts” is made possible through a special grant given to MCM by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Miami  – Beginning Saturday, February 11, 2017, kids can join Sid the Science Kid on an amazing, scientific adventure when Sid the Science Kid: The Super-Duper Exhibit! opens at Miami Children’s Museum! This exciting, new traveling exhibit brings the award-winning PBS KIDS TV series Sid the Science Kid to life. For the first time ever, kids will be able to step into Sid’s world and become “science kids” themselves as they discover and investigate everyday science questions around Sid’s home, at school in the Super Fab Lab and on the playground. Through fun, hands-on activities, kids will use scientific tools and thinking to learn about simple machines, the laws of motion, magnetism, air power and the five senses. It’s sure to be a super-duper-ooper-schmooper good time!

The event, emceed by journalist and former CBS4 Anchor Shannon Hori Cogan, also honored MCM Chairman of the Board, Jeff Berkowitz, for his many years of great leadership and service to the Museum.

Miami, FL (April 25, 2017) – Miami Children’s Museum will launch the first-ever museum exhibit based on Disney Junior’s hit series, “The Lion Guard,” which continues the epic storytelling of “The Lion King” and follows the adventures of Kion, the second-born cub of Simba and Nala, and his diverse group of friends as they unite to protect the Pride Lands.  The exhibit will debut at Miami Children’s Museum in January 2018 for six months and then travel to other children’s museums across the country through 2022.

Miami Children’s Museum is excited to announce the reopening of the newly renovated Five Millers Family Foundation Gallery, South Florida and Me Gallery.  This beautifully redesigned exhibit also features the exciting Ethel and Harry Reckson Foundation, Michael Spritzer and Marjorie Baron Snoezelen Room, specifically designed to meet the needs of children with autism spectrum disorder.  The South Florida and Me Gallery opened on Wednesday, March 28.

Miami Children’s Museum has received a prestigious grant from the Miami Bayside Foundation to support its summer internship program. This grant will provide a paid internship for five minority youth from the City of Miami. Interns will be paid for 240 hours of service, over 10 weeks, including training and will receive ongoing assessment and coaching to help them develop specific skills.

Miami Children’s Museum, with the support of KaBOOM! and Target Corporation, will open a new play area on Sunday, August 18th at 11AM at The Bethel Church, 14440 Lincoln Blvd, in the Richmond Heights community of South Florida. The church provides weekly religious services and is open to everyone in the community. The church also owns several houses located around the perimeter of the space that it provides to the community as transitional housing for those in need. Installing a Play Everywhere play space provides the children living in these transitional houses with much needed fun filled with endless hours of opportunities for play. The play space includes an area filled with colorful sidewalk games, landscaping to beautify the space and picnic tables to create an inviting area where families can come together and will serve about 750 kids annually.

Pirate Island returns to Miami Children’s Museum on Saturday, October 27, 2018! Join us as a fantasy world of pirate adventures come to life with games, stories, shows and even live pirates! The centerpiece of the exhibit is a pirate ship where you can explore, blast air cannons and walk to the plank. Visit our pirate academy and learn how to tie knots, handle ropes, speak like a pirate, dress up and even choose a pirate name for yourself! Everyone gets a map that leads to a treasure. Miami Children’s Museum has recently appointed Elaine Blattner as its Chief Development and Business Relations Officer. She comes to the organization with 20 years’ experience in promoting philanthropy, relationship development and leadership in a business environment with competing needs. She has built strong relationships with various sectors – public, private and not-for-profit – throughout South Florida; and, her expertise focuses on major gift fundraising, campaigns, advancement operations and coaching/mentoring. Most recently, Ms. Blattner was consulting under Blattner Consulting, providing strategic direction and fundraising counsel to not-for-profit. Previously, she served as the Assistant Vice President – Development/Senior Director at Miami Dade College Foundation where she provided direction for the fundraising efforts by leading a team that focused on major gift fundraising, corporate relations and foundation gifts.

Miami Children’s Museum is proud to present Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: A Grr-ific Exhibit” from Saturday, January 25 through Sunday, May 10, 2020. Created by the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh in partnership with The Fred Rogers Company, this exhibit is based on the award-winning PBS KIDS television series that follows the adventures of 4-year-old Daniel Tiger and his friends. The partnership sought to connect the familiar TV world, where young viewers learn and find comfort with Daniel, to the three-dimensional, multi-sensory experience the exhibit provides.

Miami Children’s Museum values the health and safety concerns for our community and as an effort to further halt the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Miami Children’s Museum has made a very difficult but necessary decision to close temporarily effective today Friday, March 13, 2020.  While there are no reported cases of COVID -19 related to our Museum, and only 3 in Miami Dade County, we are taking this precautionary measure to ensure the safety of all our visitors, employees and community partners.

While we are closing the Museum to the public, we are not presently closing the building or shutting down Museum operations. Museum business will continue with some staff working remotely and some “socially distanced” in the building. Professional educators consistently stress the importance of developing early learning skills in young children, especially those between 12 months to 5 years old.  During these increasingly challenging times, Miami Children’s Museum realizes that learning opportunities have been severely limited.  That’s why they have unveiled an exciting new virtual learning preschool curriculum – Play, Learn, Imagine & Create at Home (PLIC@Home) – at the Early Childhood Institute (ECI).  Though Miami Children’s Museum’s doors are temporarily closed to the public, they have gone virtual to continue enriching the lives of all children by fostering a love of learning through play and enabling children to realize their highest potential.

Miami Children’s Museum believes that everyone deserves a Happy Halloween, that’s why they have partnered with some awesome organizations to provide a safe and free trick or treat experience to all families this Halloween.  Dress up in your favorite costume and head to the Museum on Saturday, October 31st from 11:00AM – 2:00PM for a festive, not-so-spooky, drive-thru celebration for kids of all ages.

It’s Healthy Kids Month at Miami Children’s Museum and what better way to celebrate than by providing families in South Florida experiencing food insecurity with access to nutritious foods and resources that inspire a healthy lifestyle.  While Miami Children’s Museum’s galleries are temporarily closed to the public due to Covid-19, it remains dedicated to serving the community and fulfilling its mission, both in person and virtually.  The Museum pivoted its signature Healthy Kids Day event into a drive-thru food distribution to provide our community with a safe and family-fun experience that promotes one of the Museum’s core values: health and wellness.  The Museum has partnered with Farm Share, the largest and most active food distribution organization throughout Florida, to put a good foot forward.  The event is sponsored by Florida Dairy Farmers, Florida Healthy Kids Corporation, Geico North Miami, The Kirk Foundation, Susan & Richard Lampen, and Molina Healthcare.

Hang on to your hats and watch out for the Cat in the Hat as Miami Children’s Museum and The Children’s Trust commemorate one of the world’s greatest children’s book authors with a week-long virtual celebration, culminating in a drive-thru birthday bash on Saturday, March 6, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Visit the Museum’s website or social media platforms from Tuesday, March 2 – Saturday, March 6 for an extravaganza of Seussical fun for everyone.  Miami Children’s Museum and The Children’s Trust, in partnership with Florida Dairy Farmers, PNC Bank, and Molina Healthcare, will be honoring Dr. Seuss’s wonderful contributions to literacy by providing the community with accessible digital resources including storytellings from celebrity readers, musical and theatrical performances from the Museum’s Theatre Troupe, and how-to activities like how to make Green Eggs & Ham and more.
